If you’re traveling to Whitefish, MT don’t forget that Glacier National Park is just 25 miles away! Known affectionately as the “Crown of the Continent”, Glacier National Park is a must see on your travels.
Hiking: The park offers over 700 miles of hiking trails for the hiking enthusiasts out there.
Apgar Lookout: This hike is uphill, but unintimidating. It comes to and end with views of both West Glacier and Lake McDonald.
Avalanche Lake: Access Avalanche Lake via the Trail of the Cedars. This 6 mile trail will take you right to the banks of Avalanche Lake.
The Highline Loop: As one of the most scenic trails in America, The Highline Loop is a must-hike. View Glacier National Park from a ledge with 100 ft drops (woah!) Don’t let that deter you though, a handrail has been installed in that stretch of the hike.
Going-to-the-Sun Road: The Going-to-the-Sun Road is a national historic landmark that spans 50 miles connecting West Glacier to East Glacier. You can travel by personal vehicle or take a guided Red Bus tour. If you plan to visit GTTSR in the summer of 2022, please make sure you plan in advance as they are requiring tickets! More about the Glacier National Park ticket system here.
Camping: There are 13 camp grounds to choose from within GNP. There are a few different camping style options, including hiker/biker camping, RV camping or tent camping.
Fishing: Lake fishing is open all year round in the park, but be careful to find the right place to fish, there are a few spots that are off-limits.
Rafting: Spring is the perfect time for rafting as the runoff from the mountains is raging!
Snowshoeing: Explore the Lake McDonald valley via snowshoes in the winter for a quieter, more serene experience!
Lake McDonald: Lake McDonald is the biggest lake in Glacier and offers lots of activities. Swimming, paddle boarding, and fishing on the lake are popular among visitors. If that doesn’t sell you, the stunning views alone will!
